East Gippsland Rail Trail

This rail trail now connects Bairnsdale to Orbost via a 105 km trail. The first 10 km of the trail from Bairnsdale to the Nicholson River is sealed, the remainder is mostly hard packed gravel. The inexperienced rider should note that there are a few sandy sections (especially near Nowa Nowa) where you may fight to stay upright. Also watch out for culverts and fallen tree branches. Suitable for mountain bikes or hybrids only.

The highlights are the steady climb to Siberia Crossing and the massive tressle bridge near Nowa Nowa. Make sure you have plenty of water, especially in the summer months, because there are no shops or taps between Nowa Nowa and Orbost. This ride is best undertaken in Spring or Autumn.
